[Debate] A Brand picked up yesterday beats an ADC main. The bot-lane mage problem splits the world

Patch 26.14 pulled a Brand buff. Mages (APCs) lining up in the bot lane have set the world arguing. Riot calls it healthy diversity, but...

In patch 26.14, a planned Brand buff was pulled. The reason: concerns about "mages in the bot lane". Right now the bot lane has Brand, Veigar and Swain lining up alongside genuine marksmen, and winning more often. Riot's Phroxzon explained that a roughly 4:1 ratio of marksmen to mages counts as healthy bot-lane diversity. Forums abroad are on fire over it.

What is an APC anyway?

APC = AP Carry: putting a mage that deals AP damage into the ADC slot. Many mages are straightforward to pilot and can shove a lane in with a stun or a burn. That is why people say it's "quicker than practising a difficult ADC" — and that's exactly the spark here.

The main bot-lane mages right now

ChampionCore strength
Brand BrandStun plus high magic damage. Landing it is the whole job
Veigar VeigarBurst damage and cage CC. The longer the game, the more untouchable
Swain SwainArea damage and self-healing. Tanky and hard to melt

Even on trackers above Emerald, mage bots visibly outperform marksmen in places. That it shows up in the numbers, not just in feel, is what keeps the debate going.

Reactions from abroad (selected)

  • A Brand somebody picked up yesterday beats people with hundreds of ADC games. I'd like a dictionary where that reads as healthy
  • I'll accept the 4:1 ratio. It's that "1" breaking my spirit every single time
  • Simple to play and higher win rate. What kind of game punishes you for picking the harder option
  • In the ADC's lane, the ADC has the worst time. The sentence is already a joke
  • Getting melted in an instant off a stun — before we discuss counterplay, I can't even react
  • On the flip side, it beats endless ADC mirrors. I don't dislike this diversity
  • The moment they pulled the Brand buff, Riot clearly knows it too
  • Pros and streamers are split right down the middle. That's how deep this runs

Wrapping up

The point is simple: the difficulty of piloting and the reward in win rate don't line up. Diversity itself is fun — having another option beyond the endless ADC-mirror attrition is welcome. But a balance where practice goes unrewarded doesn't last. Curb the mages' upside, or raise marksmen's lane durability. Which way Riot steers will decide what the bot lane looks like.
