Base movement speed with no items on. Lining up every champion shows speed is decided almost entirely by role — and the gap between fastest and slowest is bigger than expected.
Base movement speed is a champion's "raw legs," before any items or runes kick in. Line up every champion and you find that speed is decided almost entirely by role. And the gap between the fastest and the slowest turned out crueler than expected.
The fastest is Master Yi's 355, alone at the top
| Fast base move speed | Value |
|---|---|
Master Yi | 355 |
Illaoi | 350 |
Jax | 350 |
Nasus | 350 |
Olaf | 350 |
Shyvana | 350 |
The top is Master Yi's 355, and he's alone up there. He's the only champion in the game with that value. Below him, seven champions share 350, and the lineup — Illaoi, Jax, Nasus, Olaf, Shyvana, Trundle and Udyr — is made up entirely of fighters who thrive on getting in close.
The more a champion's job depends on closing the distance, the faster the raw legs. It sounds obvious once you say it, but seeing it show up this cleanly in the numbers is still striking. This isn't speed for running away — it's speed handed out for closing in.
The slowest is Rell's 315, alone at the bottom
| Slow base move speed | Value |
|---|---|
Rell | 315 |
Anivia | 325 |
Ashe | 325 |
Caitlyn | 325 |
Ziggs | 325 |
Soraka | 325 |
The slowest is Rell's 315, also unique, the only champion in the game with that number. With 19 champions sharing 325, she still sits a further 10 below them. It makes sense if you think of it as the trade-off for a kit built around dismounting to fight.
The 325 crowd centres on ranged mages like Anivia and Ziggs, and marksmen who shoot from behind like Ashe and Caitlyn. Champions who don't need to close the distance themselves end up with slower legs.
Around two-thirds of all champions sit at 335 or above
| Base move speed | Count |
|---|---|
| 335 | 42 champions |
| 330 | 38 champions |
| 340 | 37 champions |
| 345 | 28 champions |
| 325 | 19 champions |
Looking at the spread, 335 is the most common at 42 champions. 115 champions sit at 335 or above, which works out to roughly two-thirds of all 173 champions. In other words, "normal legs" sit around 335, and 325 or below is a genuine minority.
The gap between the fastest 355 and the slowest 315 is 40. That sounds small as a raw number, but as a ratio it's about 1.13x, which works out close to the difference a single pair of boots makes from the start. Rell not being able to catch Master Yi isn't a coincidence.
Wrapping up
Movement speed turned out to be the stat that most honestly shows "where is this champion designed to fight." Fighters who close in and swing are fast; mages and marksmen who fight from range are slow. Even Rell being the sole slowest champion makes sense once you see it as the flip side of her unique mount mechanic.
It isn't strength itself, but as a clue to why this champion moves the way it does, this felt like a pretty honest number.
