[By The Numbers] League Runs on 13 Different Resources, Not Just Mana — 28 Champions Use Something Else, 7 of Them Unique

We tallied the resource field for all 173 champions in Data Dragon. 28 run on something other than mana, and 7 of those use a resource nobody else shares. Energy pools are locked at 200, no-resource champs pay in cooldowns instead.

Everyone assumes League champions all burn mana to cast spells. Not quite. I went through the partype field for all 173 champions in Data Dragon, and 28 of them run on something other than mana — seven of those run on a resource nobody else in the game shares.

Resources are the price of casting

Every ability drains a bar, and once it's empty you're stuck waiting or chugging potions. The catch is that the bar itself isn't standardized. Champions on Energy, Fury, or Rage build and burn resource completely differently from mana users.

The full breakdown across 173 champions

Mana145

Fury4
Rage2

Unique (one champion each)7

Mana users make up 145 of 173, or 83.8%. The remaining 28 champions (16.2%) run on something else entirely.

Energy users all share the same fixed pool

Energy championMax mp
Akali Akali200
Ambessa Ambessa200
Kennen Kennen200
LeeSin Lee Sin200
Zed Zed200
Shen Shen400

Five of the six Energy champions cap out at exactly 200, and it never scales with level (growth is flatly zero). The only exception is Shen at 400. Compare that to mana users, who average around 355 but range from Vayne's 232 to Aurelion Sol's 530 — a 2.3x spread. Energy champions are deliberately kept uniform.

"None" champions pay in cooldowns instead

Garen, Katarina, Riven, Zac, and Dr. Mundo all show 0 in the mp field. There's no such thing as running out for them — cooldowns are the only leash on how often they can cast. Viego is the odd one out here: his mp field reads 10000, which doesn't show up anywhere in an actual match (no resource bar appears on his HUD), so it's almost certainly a placeholder value in the data.

Seven champions run on something nobody else has

Unique resourceChampion
Aatrox Blood WellAatrox
Kled CourageKled
Mordekaiser ShieldMordekaiser
Rengar FerocityRengar
Rumble HeatRumble
Sett GritSett
Vladimir Crimson RushVladimir

None of these seven names overlap with any of the other 172 champions. Vladimir's Crimson Rush, Rengar's Ferocity — each is built specifically around that champion's kit. Bel'Veth is the odd one out: her partype field is blank, so she doesn't fit cleanly into the mana group or the unique-resource group (she also has no visible resource bar in-game).

Takeaway

Add it all up and League actually runs 13 resource systems in parallel, not just mana. Six are shared across multiple champions, seven belong to exactly one. Building a whole custom resource just for a single kit says the resource bar itself is treated as part of a champion's identity, not just a UI element. If you want a build that never has to worry about running dry, these 28 champions are the place to start.

Viego's mp field reading 10000 made me do a double take. Turns out he's just the lone wolf of the "None" club.
