Summoner spells only come in 4 cooldown tiers: 15, 180, 240, 300 seconds — Smite to Flash is a 20x gap

All 9 summoner spells land on just four cooldown values: 15, 180, 240, 300 seconds. Flash and Teleport tie exactly at 300, while Smite sits alone at 15 — a 20x gap.

League has 9 summoner spells, but line up every cooldown and there are only four values: 15, 180, 240, and 300 seconds. Flash and Teleport land on exactly 300 each, while Smite sits alone at 15 — a 20x gap.

This number never shrinks from items

Summoner spell cooldowns are immune to ability haste. No rune or item build changes them, so what follows is the raw, untouched balance value for each spell. I genuinely thought stacking haste sped up Smite at some point. It doesn't, and that's on me.

9 spells, only 4 tiers

SpellCooldownUnlock level
Smite Smite15s3
Ignite Ignite180s9
Barrier Barrier180s4
Heal Heal240s1
Exhaust Exhaust240s4
Cleanse Cleanse240s9
Ghost Ghost240s1
Flash Flash300s7
Teleport Teleport300s7

Four of the nine spells sit at exactly 240 seconds: Heal, Exhaust, Cleanse, and Ghost all share the same number down to the second. Unlock levels don't follow the same pattern at all — Heal and Ghost come online at level 1, but Cleanse waits until level 9. Cooldown length and unlock timing are clearly tuned on separate axes.

Why Smite stands alone

Smite only being 15 seconds tracks. It can't touch an enemy champion at all, it only hits monsters and minions, so the number reads like it was set assuming zero combat relevance. Flash and Teleport, on the other hand, might get used two or three times a game at most, and both land on exactly 300. That overlap backs up a simple read: the more a spell can swing the whole map, the longer its cooldown gets.

Takeaway

Cooldown length doesn't measure raw spell power, it tracks how much a spell can swing a game. Smite barely touches combat, so it's short. Flash and Teleport can flip the map, so they're long. The 240-second cluster in the middle is where "useful but not game-deciding" spells like Heal and Ghost land. Nine spells compressing into just four tiers says a lot about how deliberately this was tuned.

Smite and Flash share a 20x gap and somehow both still get filed under the same "summoner spell" label
